The Successful Cover Letter

Some tips for writing a successful cover letter:

  •
  • Use the letter format of opening, body and conclusion.
  •
  •
  • Address the letter directly to the contact person identified in the job description.
  •
  •
  • Your cover letter should be three or four short paragraphs or about 150 words in length.
  •
  •
  • Specify what internship you’re applying for and how you found out about it. If you were referred by a teacher or counselor, mention the name of that individual.
  •
  •
  • Tell why you’re interested in the internship and/or employer.
  •
  •
  • Review the job description and summarize your specific qualifications for the position; do not repeat or summarize your resume.
  •
  •
  • Provide contact information — phone number and/or email address — for follow-up, such as an interview.
  •
  •
  • Thank the employer for time and consideration.
  •
  •
  • Check your spelling and grammar. Ask for help — avoid the small errors that can undermine your presentation.
  •
  •
  • Be sure to sign your name.
