The Successful Cover Letter
Some tips for writing a successful cover letter:
-
- Use the letter format of opening, body and conclusion.
-
-
- Address the letter directly to the contact person identified in the job description.
-
-
- Your cover letter should be three or four short paragraphs or about 150 words in length.
-
-
- Specify what internship you’re applying for and how you found out about it. If you were referred by a teacher or counselor, mention the name of that individual.
-
-
- Tell why you’re interested in the internship and/or employer.
-
-
- Review the job description and summarize your specific qualifications for the position; do not repeat or summarize your resume.
-
-
- Provide contact information — phone number and/or email address — for follow-up, such as an interview.
-
-
- Thank the employer for time and consideration.
-
-
- Check your spelling and grammar. Ask for help — avoid the small errors that can undermine your presentation.
-
-
- Be sure to sign your name.
