A Checklist for Successful Interviews
You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. The interview is an opportunity for you to convince the employer why you are the best candidate for the internship.
Before the interview:
-
- Check out the company’s website to learn as much as possible about the mission, products or services, and size.
-
-
- Clarify the location and map the way to get there.
-
-
- Make sure that you are familiar with the internship description.
-
-
- Prepare. Rehearse your answers to possible questions, and write out some questions to ask during the interview.
-
-
- Organize your materials. This may include resume, cover letter, references and work samples, depending on what the employer has requested.
-
-
- Select an outfit to wear that is neat and professional.
-
During the interview:
-
- Present yourself with confidence — shake hands, maintain eye contact, and smile.
-
-
- Listen carefully to information shared and questions asked. You can take notes.
-
-
- Speak clearly and formally — avoid the style you may use with your friends.
-
-
- Describe yourself in a positive way — it’s ok to talk about your strengths and skills and accomplishments. That’s why you are there. If asked about a weakness or an example of a failure, be honest and describe what you learned and how you are trying to improve.
-
-
- Give yourself time to think before you answer a question. Pauses are an acceptable way to move from one topic to another.
-
-
- Ask questions. Use your prepared list and additional questions that come up during the interview.
-
After the interview:
-
- Send thank-you notes to each person who interviewed you and restate your interest in the position. Notes can be sent by mail or email.
-
-
- Contact the employer if you think of more questions or need additional information that is not available on the website.
