Steps to a Successful Internship

Whether this is your first time with an internship or you are seeking more successful experiences, use the following steps to build your internship program:

  •
  • Select someone on your staff to coordinate the internships. That individual should have the time and interest to set up and monitor the program, and will become the “go-to” person for interns and staff.
  •
  •
  • Clearly identify the tasks and skills needed to perform them. What are the ways that your company can use interns? Are there short term projects that require additional staff? What skills are you seeking?
  •
  •
  • Post the internship on this website. Just sign in, or if you do not yet have an account, you can register for free. After you log-on and create an account, you will be guided through the process of posting your internship.
  •
  •
  • Select candidates from the applications submitted. Students can search through the employer postings; when they find one of interest, they must log-on and create an account in order to submit an application. Student applicants are able to submit a resume or complete an on-line application that goes directly to the employer.

  •
  • Interview the candidates. Applicants are prepared for both telephone and in-person interviews. Sample Interview Questions

  •
  • Select a mentor for the intern. This individual should be familiar with the assignments and available to supervise and guide the intern. The Ideal Mentor

  •
  • Close your internship posting. After your selection has been made, you can notify other applicants that the position is no longer available.
  •
  •
  • Evaluate your intern and the program. Interns need ongoing feedback from mentors and co-workers to expand their skills.
